Women offer up words of wisdom as new parents prepare for motherhood
Reema Kapoor describes it as a "dream come true".
At 8.16am this morning, she gave birth to a yet-to-be named baby girl at Westmead Hospital in Sydney's west.
"She decided to make me feel very special and come on Mother's Day," she said.
"I'm so happy."
It is these moments — the happy moments — that will live with Ms Kapoor forever.
But as any mother will attest, raising children can be hard, isolating and stressful.
You can feel alone, as if the world is caving in on you.
With that in mind, Westmead Hospital in conjunction with Western Sydney University, initiated the Mother’s Day letters project – where older mums write letter to newer mothers offering up advice.
In Ms Kapoor's letter, which she was reading only five hours after giving birth, it told her there would be moments of "doubt, confusion and frustration" but reminded her to "go with the flow" and "not to pressure herself" if things weren't working.
Mums offer up advice
The advice written in the letters, which were distributed around the hospital today, was a mix of positivity and honesty:
"Don't forget to nourish yourself with plenty of fresh food and water. Your body will need the energy to recover.
"As someone who experienced fairly significant maternal anxiety, I urge you to talk to people ... If the people you were hoping would listen, don't quite understand, please seek help from a kind, understanding professional ... they are out there and they are magnificent."
"Learn to let go in the moments where nothing seems to be going right. It will happen. It's normal for babies to cry. There is no such thing as a 'perfect' mother."
"When being seen with a newborn, you're bound to hear (mainly from strangers) 'enjoy every minute'. Please don't worry if you don't".
"Go for a walk, go to Rhyme Times at the libraries in different suburbs. Chat to mums at the park as they push their prams. My dearest mum friends are ones I met on a lonely day when I pounded the pavement to get out and do something ... anything."
Ms Kapoor, who already has a five-year-old at home, said the program was a fantastic idea.
"It's really hard at times waking up at night and the stresses that come with that," she said. "So to hear from other mums and realise you're not alone is a great thing.
"My advice would be: always believe in yourself — you have given life. Only women can do that. Don't feel alone and stressed if you need help talk to other mothers."
Mother Fentyan Chen, who gave birth to twin girls Yulia and Lola at Westmead two days ago, said it was fantastic to hear from other mothers so "you don't feel so alone".
"It's important get advice like this," she said.
"It's exciting for me… . but I think I'll be a little bit tired – when they need to be feed both of them will need feeding and it'll be the same when they need their nappy changed."
