A Kansas City father-of-two got the surprise of a lifetime when his kids gifted him with a rare 1966 car to celebrate his retiring.
The touching moment was captured on video by the man's son.
According to the brother and sister, their father always talked about a 1966 Pontiac LeMans Sprint 6 he had when he was the younger. It's not clear what happened to the car but the father always told his kids it was 'the car that got away'.
The siblings started off the surprise by giving their father a framed magazine ad of a red 1966 Pontiac LeMans Sprint 6
The brother and sister then told their dad that the car is very hard to find and he should go outside and look in his driveway
The 1966 Pontiac LeMans Sprint 6 was sitting in the father's driveway waiting for him to hop behind the wheel and take it for a spin
To celebrate the father retiring and starting a new chapter in his life, his children decided to track down a Pontiac LeMans Sprint 6 and give it to their father as a gift.
After a long search, the kids found the vehicle, put in an offer and then went and picked up the rare gem and transported it back to Kansas City. A Sprint 6 in similar condition and age was recently on the market for $35,000.
To try and trick their dad a little bit, the brother and sister handed their father a framed magazine ad of the car so he would think that was his gift.
The kids also handed him a note.
'For as long as we can remember, you've been our hero... You've worked incredibly hard your entire life not only for yourself but to make an amazing life for us. Mission accomplished, and now you're retiring.
'For many, retirement seems like an end. Five decades of work and routine are coming to a close, but as we thought about what to get you, we chose to think of it as a beginning,' the message read. 'This is the opportunity to explore the amazing life you've created for yourself... You often talked about the car that got away, your 1966 Pontiac LeMans Sprint 6.'
Beaming, the man told his kids that he had 'a lot of fun' in that car.
The dad couldn't stop smiling as he checked out the car and then hoped behind the wheel
After gushing about how beautiful the car is, the father took it for a drive in his neighborhood
The siblings said their dad always talked about the car saying it was 'the car that got away'
'That's the first one we drove without having licenses,' the father said, as his kids laughed.
The father was then handed a second note explaining how hard it is to find the 1966 car and was told to go check his driveway.
'You're kidding!' the father says, jumping up from his chair to go look outside.
'Are you serious?' he asks as he walks up to the car. 'Wow. Oh wow!
With a big smile on his face, the father hops into the driver's seat before taking the red beauty for a spin.
'This is gorgeous,' he says.
The 1966 LeMans Sprint evolved in a rather unusual way, according to BarnFinds, a site dedicated to antique items.
John DeLorean, then head of Pontiac, had an idea to ‘inject a sophisticated European feel’ into their Tempest/LeMans line and that’s how the Sprint was born.
Because the car didn’t have a V8 engine, which was popular in the mid-to-late '60s, the car never really caught on. The last year it was made was in 1969.
