At least 15 people have been injured after two suspects detonated a bomb in a restaurant near Toronto, Canada, police said.

The explosion took place just after 10.30pm local time at an Indian restaurant in Mississauga, some 20 miles from Toronto, Ontario.

Authorities said 'two hooded suspects' walked into the Bombay Bhel restaurant and detonated the improvised explosion device before fleeing the scene.

Eyewitnesses describe chaos with injured guests and panicked families fleeing the restaurant, where some had reportedly been holding a child's birthday party.

'Glass was broken in the street. There was a child's birthday party. Everything was destroyed,' Rafael Conceicao, who was nearby when the bomb detonated, told CBC.ca

'Lots of blood in the floor. Many people were screaming. They were trying to run out from the restaurant.

'There was a guy with glass inside his eyes. Many people were bleeding so much.'

Fifteen people were taken to hospital, three of them with critical injuries, the Peel Regional Paramedic Service said in a Tweet.

'Two parties fled the scene immediately after the incident,'  the tweet added. 

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility, and the motive for the bombing is not yet clear.

Police posted a CCTV image on Twitter appealing to the public for help in identifying the two men.

The photo shows two people with dark zip-up hoodies walking into an establishment with one of them appearing to be carrying an object.  

The first suspect is said to be a male about 5'10 to six feet tall with a stocky build. Police said he appears to be in his mid-20s with light skin and was wearing dark blue jeans, a dark zip-up hoodie pulled over his head, a baseball hat and a black cloth covering his face.

The second suspect is also said to be a male about 5'9 to 5'10 with fair skin, thin build and was wearing faded blue jeans with a dark zip-up hoodie covering his head, a grey t-shirt and his face covered.  

Dozens of emergency crews were outside the restaurant in Mississauga, Canada's sixth largest city located is in Lake Ontario, about 20 miles west of Toronto.

Authorities said more than a dozen were transported to various hospitals with 'critical blast injuries', according to News.com.au. Three of them are said to be in critical condition.

'At this point there is a very heavy police presence,' reporter Jeremy Cohn said, adding that tactical, K9 and explosives disposal units were also present at the scene. 

According to Cohn the injuries have been described as 'penetrating trauma injuries'.

The attack in Mississauga comes a month after a driver plowed his white Ryder rental van into a lunch-hour crowd in Toronto, killing ten people and injuring 15.
