Blame Meghan Markle. But wearing your hair loose but tied up has never been more fashionable.

Pinterest's 2018 trend report found that the most-searched hairstyle for weddings was the 'messy up do', with searches up a huge 1247 per cent year over year.

It's not just Meghan who is in on the messy up do act, either.

Celebrities across the red carpet including Gwyneth Paltrow, Gigi Hadid, Nicole Kidman and more are adopting the look - which gives off just the right amount of insouciance and elegance.

Here, with the help of celebrity hairdresser, Anthony Nader, FEMAIL takes a look at just why the messy up do is the hairstyle du jour.

Anthony also explains how you can recreate Meghan's favourite style at home.

Cosy up in a cashmere knit by Victoria Beckham like Meghan

Even before Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagment, everyone loved the couple.

And now that they have set a date for the wedding, there is an even bigger frenzy, particularly over the glamorous bride-to-be who is shaking things up in the royal family.

From joining the royals on Christmas Day in Sandringham (unheard of before marriage), to wearing a partially sheer dress in one of her official engagement photos, Meghan is not playing by the rules and everyone loves a rebel.

For their visit to Belfast, Meghan recycled a trusty cashmere knit by Victoria Beckham. It's simple yet super luxe and we love the subtle 'VB' embroidered detail - branding is really on trend right now.

According to the hairdresser, the reason why this style is enjoying such a moment in the spotlight right now is simple.

'It can go from gym to work, to cocktail drinks at night with minimal effort,' he said. 'In all of these places, it still looks naturally chic.'

The hairdresser explained that it's the perfect hair style to wear with high neck collars or scarves, as it doesn't interfere with your style for the day.

'Meghan Markle is really working the messy up do recently,' he said. 'And giving it a new Royal life, which I love.'

Others including Nicole Kidman are fans of the look, which prides itself on being chic - but not over the top

To get the look, Anthony recommends you have day-old hair, as this will be easier to sweep up and style - clean hair will fall out too easily (pictured: Jennifer Lawrence)

So if you want to get the look at home, what should you be doing?

For best results, Anthony said in fact your hair shouldn't be freshly washed. If this was the case then it would slip out and wouldn't last a full day.

'This also ensures that it shows the texture of the hair, which gives that cool-girl, effortless vibe,' he added.

Next, before you even start trying to tie it up, he recommends spritzing it with a spray:

'To maximise the longevity of the style, I'd recommend a dry texture spray spritzed onto the roots and mid-lengths while your hair is still down,' he said.

'Massage this in, flip it up into your top knot and you're good to go.'

If you want to give the look a polished edge, you can curl or style the loose parts which come down from your face (pictured: Meghan Markle)

When it comes to creating your up do, experts advocate pulling it back loosely, removing strands around the crown or nape of the neck, before securing with a hair tie.

'If you have a petite face it can be a good idea to have your up do placed high on the top of your head, as this elongates the shape of your face,' Anthony said.

Finally, the hairdresser said you can curl strands for a more polished, professional look.

Desk to dinner - or a wedding - in no time. Plus, it's not a problem if it rains, as this will only add to the whimsy of the look.
