Plans for hypermarket Kaufland's first Australian store revealed
Part of Adelaide's old Le Cornu site on Anzac Highway could soon be developed as Australia's first Kaufland hypermarket — a combined supermarket and discount department store.
The German company has applied to build the store on the front 60 per cent of the Forestville site.
The other 40 per cent of the site would be offered for other development, according to plans now out for consultation through the State Planning Commission.
As well as a Kaufland, the $35 million project includes eight smaller tenancies and an undercroft car park.
About 60 jobs would be created.
Unley Councillor Don Palmer said traffic would be an issue.
"But it won't matter what development goes there — if somebody resurrected Le Cornu's there's going to be a traffic concern, if it was a supermarket there's going to be a traffic concern, even if it was purely a residential site there's a traffic concern, but something of course has to happen to the site," Cr Palmer said.
Kaufland bought the 3.6-hectare site in October 2017, a year after Le Cornu closed.
Both Kaufland and supermarket chain Lidl are part of the Schwarz Group.
