Dear Friend,  When I talk to families with Parkinson's, genetics is a frequent topic. People are curious if genetics causes Parkinson's and whether their children could inherit the disease. In most people, there isn't a single genetic mutation that causes Parkinson's disease. But there are several genetic changes that increase risk of Parkinson's. Many people, both with and without Parkinson's, are interested in learning whether they carry these mutations. But thinking about genetic testing can raise various questions and concerns. Your doctor and a genetic counselor can help. In this video, I talk about how and why genetic testing is done in Parkinson's, and how genetic counselors can answer your questions and explain your results. The "Ask the MD" videos and blogs offer practical information on research and care to help you navigate your personal Parkinson's journey.
