Secret TSA Watch List Protects Screeners From Unruly, Rude Passengers

NOTE:
You might have been distracted by Trump's efforts to save jobs in China or maybe you were glued to the Royal Wedding (a worthwhile enterprise) or perhaps you just left the house for your weekly trip to the grocery store. In any event, while you were busy doing other things, here's what the Transportation Security Administration was doing: creating a secret watchlist for airline passengers who are rude to the screeners.
That's right. Like the "No Fly" list filled with actual and potential terrorists (excepting for the misspelled and erroneous names) the agency responsible for making sure that there isn't another 9-11 attack using planes as explosive flying bombs, the New York Times has revealed that there is brand new watch list of folks who might have batted away security screeners hands or voiced an objection to being felt up by some overweight slug after you've passed through one of those blue plastic bubble machines that can detect every single one of your iron fillings and lint in your pocket.
As Fred Burton, put it rather succinctly: " If I'm running late, having a bad day and I'm rude to the screeners, do I get put on the list? Well, apparently so. Mr. Burton is a former deputy chief of counterterrorism at the State Department and he also opined: "The bottom line is that in the post 9-11 world, do we really need another watch list - particularly one from the T.S.A. which is not an intelligence agaecy?" And yes, you can pretty much tell that T.S.A's screeners do not come from the world of intelligence.
Here's the real danger from TSA's watch list:
“While people on the list are not necessarily subject to additional scrutiny, it seems likely that agents would single them out for additional attention, and there is no way to get off the list,” said Faiza Patel, a director of the Liberty and National Security Program at New York University’s Brennan Center for Justice.
Perhaps TSA screeners need protections from those nasty flyers who don't take kindly to being treated like cows led to slaughter. Of course, this is hyperbole, but you know as well as I do that threading the flying needle is just a gigantic hassle these days and coming up against the TSA and being patted down, pulled aside, your toiletries bag dumped on a metal table, screened a second time, etc. is a less than pleasant experience. But a secret "watch list?" Really? This is what we've come to when we dare express the mildest of objection to being treated like criminals every time we fly?

"But the new T.S.A. database, according to people familiar with it, includes travelers who have simply had a verbal altercation with security officers or have taken other actions that the agency said interferes in the screening process.
Civil liberties groups said that makes it even more likely that individuals who do not pose a threat to airports or planes will be swept up in the United States’ homeland security system.

She said that because the watch list will be shared with other law enforcement agencies, “it will be difficult to control the consequences.”"
