When asked about Andrew's departure, AMC offered 'no comment' to Deadline.

It's not yet clear whether Rick's exit storyline will be left open for his return, or whether he will be killed off.

His character will be 'even more in the spotlight,' Deadline reports, with a source hinting that, 'he will definitely continue fighting the good fight' in Rick's absence.

It was simultaneously reported on Tuesday that actor Reedus' girlfriend Diane Kruger, 41, is pregnant with their first child.

The German actress posted a black-and-white photo of herself on Instagram alongside a footprint emoji and is believed to have been concealing a bump during Cannes Film Festival.

This would be a second child for actor Reedus as he has son Mingus Lucien Reedus, 18, with model Helena Christensen, who he was with from 1998 until 2003.

Following the finale of the series' eighth season, the actor told Entertainment Weekly that he sees Rick's character as an 'absolutely new man' with a 'renewed sense of purpose'.

'I think there is always going to be a sense of he's lost all of the most important parts of himself,' he explained. 'And yet he has the legacy and gift that Carl gave him that is going to fuel his ambitions for the future.

'This is the man who couldn't see what Deanna saw about the future and still couldn't see it for a long, long time even throughout all of this and the battle he was hell-bent on vengeance.

'And now you will meet and find a man — depending on how much time after the events that we just witnessed — that has changed, radically, in ideas and purpose.'

Andrew isn't the only actor who will be appearing in a limited number of episodes in the upcoming season of The Walking Dead.

Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie Rhee, is set to only take part 'in six episodes from the eight-episode fall half-season of TWD,' reported Deadline earlier this month.

The 36-year-old actress is set to co-lead ABC's forthcoming action-drama series Whiskey Cavalier with Scott Foley and, therefore, will be splitting her time between the two shows.

In the last season, The Walking Dead saw the departure of actor characters Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs).

It is believed that season nine will follow the the last eight seasons by returning to screens in October.

The Walking Dead has received the highest ratings of any TV show in the last eight years.

Ratings peaked in 2016 when the Season 7 opener, which saw a double death, attracted 17million viewers. Nevertheless, the audience saw a significant decline during Season 7.

In early May, Andrew was pictured filming Season 9 with Danai Gurira and Norman Reedus on the Atlanta, Georgia set.

Pictures hinted that the characters will have been forced to adapt to civilization regressing even more, as they were all seen on horseback.

Scott M. Gimple, the show's chief content officer, said the program is primed to 'evolve in a huge way' as it enters its ninth season.

'It just feels new,' Gimple told The Hollywood Reporter last month. 'It feels like an evolved show.'

He told the publication that while the show 'very much lived in the world that Rick began with' and 'was so informed by the pilot,' the ninth season 'just takes this quantum leap forward in the stories we're telling.'

Other notable cast members spotted on the set included Lauren Cohan, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Alanna Masterson, Melissa McBride, Sydney Park, Khary Payton, Tom Payne and Pollyanna McIntosh.
