Defenceman Shea Theodore scored in a shootout to give the Vegas Golden Knights a 5-4 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night.

Vegas edge Vancouver 5-4, Brandon Pirri 2 goals.0:28

Theodore, the fourth Vegas shooter, scored on a backhand in a game the Knights almost let slip away.

Bo Horvat, Brandon Sutter and Nikolay Goldobin, with his second of the night, scored goals 5:01 apart in the third period as the Canucks erased a three-goal deficit. Goldobin tied the game at 10:53 when an innocent looking tip squirted past Vegas goalie Malcom Subban.

Vancouver's Jake Virtanen was called for hooking 15 seconds into the overtime. Theodore scored for Vegas on the power play, but the goal was overturned due to goaltender interference.

Brandon Pirri led the Golden Knights with two goals in his first NHL game of the season.

Sedins get standing ovation

The game was the first for Daniel and Henrik Sedin since announcing Monday they are retiring after Saturday's season-ending game in Edmonton. In the third period the brothers stood at the bench and waved to the crowd who gave them a standing ovation. Vegas players banged their sticks on the ice.

William Karlsson had a goal and two assists for the Golden Knights (51-22-7), who are 8-3-2 in their last 14 games. Tomas Tatar also scored for the first-year Knights, who clinched top spot in the Pacific Division Saturday. Karlsson has 12 points (four, eight assists) in five games.

Daniel Sedin earned an assist on Horvat's third-period, power-play goal for the Canucks (30-40-10), who saw a four-game win streak snapped. He also hit a post in the shootout. Henrik Sedin also missed in the shootout.

Pirri was called up Monday after playing the entire season with the AHL Chicago Wolves. The two goals give him 100 points over eight NHL seasons with five teams. Pirri played for the New York Rangers last year.

Goaltender Jacob Markstrom stopped 35 shots for Vancouver. Subban made 21 saves for Vegas.

The last home game for the Sedin twins, who spent their entire 17-season career in Vancouver, will be Thursday against Phoenix.

A large number of fans, many waving signs thanking the Sedins or holding up jerseys, pressed along the glass and stood four or five deep in the isles during the warmup. The brothers were featured in a video tribute on the big screen before receiving thunderous cheers and a standing ovation in the pre-game introductions.

There were cheers during the game each time a Sedin touched the puck.

Karlsson scored his 43rd goal of the season on a 5-on-3 power play at 2:17 of the third. His shot was tipped by Sutter and trickled past Markstrom.

Horvat made it 4-2 at 4:06. Subban stopped a shot from the point but Horvat knocked in the rebound. Sutter then made it 4-3 on a backhand at 8:21.

Vegas outshot Vancouver 16-6 in the second period and scored twice to build a 3-1 lead.

Goldobin ties game

Pirri made it 2-1 at 3:27 when he took a pass from Alex Tuch and beat Markstrom with a shot from the top of the face-off circle. Tatar scored his 20th of the season at 7:19 when he tipped Theodore's shot in from the side of the net.

The team's exchanged first-period goals.

Pirri opened the scoring at 4:28 on a laser shot from the slot.

Goldobin tied the game on a pretty goal with just 21 seconds left in the period. He took a drop pass from Sutter, chipped the puck past Vegas centre Cody Eakin, skated into the middle and scored on a high shot on the blocker side.
