Swan River shutdown to deliver payouts and opportunities for ferry companies
Compensation is likely for a ferry company which will be directly affected when the Swan River is closed for the construction of a new pedestrian bridge to Perth Stadium.
The Little Ferry Company operates tours between Elizabeth Quay and Claisebrook Cove in East Perth.
The river will be closed to all traffic for six to eight weeks from Wednesday, 300 metres either side of the bridge piers between Burswood and East Perth.
It will be shut to all river users while the middle arch of the Matagarup Bridge is put in place.
Main Roads said anchor lines and cables in and across the navigation channel would be used to stabilise barges and move bridge sections into position.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the Little Ferry Company would be directly affected and preliminary discussions around possible compensation had started.
"There will be. I don't expect it to be a significant amount," Ms Saffioti said.
"But because their whole business is actually moving between two points they won't be able to access, that's why that one's being considered."
She said it was not clear how long the river would be shut so it was too early to tell how much the company could be compensated.
"It really is going to depend on the length of time that that project, that the river is closed and the full impact," Ms Saffioti said.
"It's something that's being discussed at a preliminary stage."
River closure may open opportunity
Little Ferry Company owner Kevyn Townley said the government first contacted him about the issue 18 months ago.
"Our standard bread and butter run is from Elizabeth Quay to Claisebrook three times a day," Mr Townley said.
He would not discuss compensation specifics but said he was looking at a different tour during the closure, taking passengers to the bridge construction "[because] the process itself is damned interesting".
The Little Ferry Company will not be the only operator impacted, with the SeaLink-owned Captain Cook Cruises forced to re-route two of its regular services as a result.
Its Swan Valley lunch service will have to use Claisebrook Cove, rather than Barrack Street Jetty, as its base during the closure — with passengers ferried there from the city.
SeaLink general manager Andrew Lane said the company was reserving its rights to bid for compensation if the disruption impacts passenger numbers.
"We have certainly opened up dialogue on that," Mr Lane said.
"But with the conversations we have had with all our passengers so far, it has not seemed to have impacted bookings."
