Stockholm's Metro is the world's longest art gallery

It is often touted as the the world's most beautiful underground system.

And the Stockholm Metro is one of the world's longest galleries with 90 of the 100 stations displaying colourful public works of art.

The first subway line in the Swedish capital was established in the 1950s with the T-Centralen being the main station in the centre of the city.

At the time, research carried out in Paris showed that people living in the city spent a total of years of their life on public transport.

And this prompted Swedish artists Siri Derkert and Vera Nilsson to urge to argue that it would be the perfect place for art the public could enjoy.

In 1956, the first competition was launched to find artists to display their work in the metro stations.

One of the most colourful and stunning stations is Kungsträdgården, which can be roughly translated into English as 'King's Garden'

Artist Per Holmberg designed the art for the walls in Huvudsta station, pictured, which is located on the blue line 

A total of 21 artists were selected and by the 1970s a committee called the Trafikens Konstnamnd was set up to decide which artists should feature in the stations.

Now over one million trips are taken on the Stockholm Metro everyday with most passengers able to appreciate the public art.

Each station has a different theme with some tackling societal issues.

The artwork in Universitetet station, pictured, is by Belgian and Parisian artist Françoise Schein and reflects the theme of travel and ecology

The work of Japanese artist Takashi Naraha adorns the walls of Solna Strand station which includes cubes decorated with clouds

The futuristic art inside the Tekniska högskolan metro station, which is located on the red line of the Stockholm Metro 

Skarpnäck metro station has a bright red ceiling and sculptures that almost look like Stonehenge adorning the platforms 

Cave like walls and brightly coloured seats can be found at Duvbo Station, which is in the residential area of Sundbyberg in suburban Stockholm

At Östermalmstorg station, the art reflects women's rights, inclusivity is the theme at Tensta station, and Solna station tackles the problem of deforestation.

Meanwhile Kungsträdgården subway station looks like an archaeological excavation, with the remains of the old Stockholm Makalös palace.

A total of 150 artists now have their work on show in the form of sculptures, mosaics, paintings, installations and engravings.
