Meghan Markle is descended from Scottish hero Robert the Bruce, it has emerged. 

The royal bride-to-be can trace her family back to the Scottish king who won independence from England at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.

The link between royal families seven centuries apart is revealed in Andrew Morton's new book Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, according to The Sun. 

Mr Morton said: 'It is ­possible to trace a direct line through 25 generations to Robert I of Scotland, perhaps the most colourful of all Scottish kings.

'Meghan is distantly related to most European royal families thanks to her English kinswoman Margaret Kerdeston, who lived in the 15th century.'

Frequent inter-marriage between royal families over the centuries means that Harry and Meghan are very distantly related, he said. 

Robert Bruce was king of Scots from 1306 until his death in 1329 aged around 55.

He waged war to wear down his Scottish opponents and the English regime in Scotland, culminating in the battle of Bannockburn in 1314.

Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan made the same discovery last year after having his DNA traced for the programme. 

He met secret family member Linda Jones, a farmer from New Zealand, who revealed the family went back to Robert the Bruce.  

Mr Morton's book also states that Meghan 'aspires to be Diana 2.0' and was deeply affected by her death.

The Royal bride-to-be also dumped first husband Trevor Engleson by post, the book claims.   

Who was Robert the Bruce, the Scottish king who won independence from England in 1314? 

Born in 1274, Robert the Bruce became King of Scots in 1306 after stabbing his rival John Comyn, also known as the Red Comyn.

His eldest daughter Marjorie married Walter Stewart, one of Robert the Bruce's commanders and High Steward of Scotland.

Their eldest son went on to become Robert II and established the Stewart line of kings, who would later inherit the throne of both England and Scotland, uniting the two countries. 

The Scottish victory at the Battle of Bannockburn, the last in a series of battles to secure Scottish independence, put an end to English King Edward II's plans to conquer the country.

In 2014 revellers marked the 700th anniversary of the battle with a weekend-long Bannockburn Live event, which featured re-enactments of the legendary clash.

'Warriors' performed in scenes choreographed by the team behind the battle sequences in hit films Gladiator and Robin Hood.   

Robert the Bruce was widely believed to have suffered from leprosy, although a study last year suggested the story was concocted as a slur. 

Researchers from Liverpool John Moores University used a computer to digitally recreate what he might have looked like.
