A huge transformation has gone on at The Painswick.
For starters, it has a new name. This used to be Cotswolds88 under the ownership of a half-Chinese, half-Italian designer called Marchella De Angelis, and on my last visit I called it ‘garish, brash and incongruous’.
Since being bought by the Calcot Collection, all the modern nonsense has been removed and you can almost hear the magnificent Palladian building sighing with relief.
It’s now the real deal in every sense of the phrase. We’re paying £225 on a Friday for dinner, bed and breakfast with a delightful room. Sliding doors lead to the bathroom, where no expense has been spared, complete with REN products and fluffy towels.
The atmosphere is relaxed, so we’re not sure why there’s a need for overstated breeziness, such as a sign in the bathroom saying Stay Awhile and the drinks menu having Glug Glug Glug written on it.
Staying awhile needs little encouragement.
The chef goes in for what he calls ‘fresh, punchy and accurate cooking’, which is another unnecessary flourish, especially given how well his food turns out. His breakfasts are wonderful.
At check-out, we are handed two bottles of water for the journey home — a nice touch.
And later an email arrives offering us 20 per cent off next time. But we’re not sure the subject — ‘miss ewe already’ is necessary.
