When it comes to dining at 36,000 feet, the choice of food is often limited.

But airline Lufthansa is launching a la carte dining - and its not just for first class passengers.

From summer 2018, those travelling in economy on the German carrier will be to order one of seven meals on long haul flights for an extra charge.

Some of the options on the new a la carte menu that is being offered to economy passengers on Lufthansa 

Passengers can chose from a hearty meal or opt for something healthy.

The options include a grilled steak, a bento box with a selection of classic Japanese sushi and hearty Bavarian snacks.

Also available is an Asian vitality menu with quinoa, Mediterranean pasta with shrimp and an exotic Thai curry.

The a la carte dining is available on all of Lufthansa's intercontinental flights from Frankfurt and Munich.

It costs between 19 and 33 (£17 to £29) euros and can be booked up to 24 hours before departure.

The seats, which have been designed exclusively for Lufthansa, are set to be available on all of the carrier's regular routes from 2020 and will coincide with the roll-out of the Boeing 777-9, which has a wider cabin than its predecessors.

The cabin will come in a 1-2-1/1-1-1 seat configuration, meaning everyone will have direct access to the aisle, so you will never have to disturb your neighbouring passenger if you want to nip to the loo or stretch your legs.
