One of Donald Trump’s early “achievements” as president was to strike a deal with United Technologies to keep 1,000 jobs in Indiana, instead of moving them to Mexico. UT was awarded millions in tax giveaways to do this.
It’s what we all know as the now-infamous “Carrier Jobs Deal.” Approximately 6 months later, they laid off 300 of those employees. 4 months after that layoff they laid off an additional 200 employees. This came after UT announced that they were going to spend upwards of $16 million dollars to automate the plant — a decision that came only days after they got their multimillion-dollar tax giveaway.
Now, United Technologies is back in the news showing the other half of the bribe they received from the Trump administration to keep 500 jobs in America.
United Technologies was recently awarded a $2.5 billion dollar Department of Defense contract. The Hill reports that the DoD “considers UT the only qualified supplier for the parts.” Here is how you can tell the DoD is lying on Trump’s instruction.
The contract was awarded with no competition — meaning that it would not be advertised openly, and other companies would not be submitting proposals to show that they had the capacity or technical capability to meet the DoD’s request.
If the DoD doesn’t actually let other companies know what they want, OF COURSE they won’t know of other “qualified suppliers.” And who is the DoD controlled by? It’s part of the executive branch and the Chief Executive is one Donald J. Trump.
Of course, United Technologies and the DoD are denying that this is a multi-billion dollar bribe paid so that Trump could engage in some ridiculous antics while trying to convince Americans he honestly cares about 1,000 jobs in a mid-western Rustbelt state.
The labor union that represents workers at the Indianapolis plant said that as of November of 2017, they already have zero faith that the plant will remain open in the long term. That’s the key thing — robots can be packed up and moved to Mexico, where the plant was going to go in the first place.
All in all, Trump and local governments have now handed United Technologies a nearly 3 billion-dollar bribe and they’ve already reneged by half on the amount of jobs they would keep in America. The other half will be disappearing soon enough by way of taxpayer funded purchases of robots so they company can move them all to Mexico. Are we WINNING yet? I can’t tell.
NOTE: Let's consider that Trump is either incompetent or wholly clueless or maybe just shooting from his proverbial hip of "I'm the smartest person in the room" scenario. With his approval ratings hovering in the mid 30's range (there was a brief bump up to 40% after the so-called Tax Reform Act passage) Trump is President for his base. Exclusively. Even his muddled support of stricter gun controls and turning public schools into armed camps (And do you think for a moment that these will prevail given that he will be mercilessly attacked by the NRA who contributed $30 million to his Presidential campaign? Not a chance.) will simply melt into oblivion in a day or too. We've seen this before when Trump promised a "love bill" to protect DACA recipients and then turned around and rejected out of hand, squashed, every single proposal that Congress was considering.
Trump simply cannot be trusted. His word is about as good as an iceberg that has floated into the Caribbean Ocean where it rapidly melts in the hot tropical sun. This is the person that we have as President.
It is no different with his expansive jobs proposals. Since he has not a clue about how the economy works or what's actually involved in crafting economic policy proposals, is it any wonder that Carrier has taken advantage of Trump's praise and then goes about doing what is in their own best economic interests in defiance of Trump's public pronouncements? No, absolutely not. This is what corporations do. When there is a choice to be made between keeping a politician's promises and the bottom line, guess which ones corporate America chooses?
