Snowboarder Scotty James named Australia's flag bearer for Pyeongchang

Snowboarder Scotty James has been chosen to carry the Australian flag at the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games in South Korea.

The 23-year-old half-pipe specialist is competing in his third Winter Olympics, after making his 2010 debut in Vancouver.

The announcement was made at a team function a day before the Games begin.

James said being named as the flag bearer was a privilege and an honour.

"So many fantastic athletes from Australia have done this, and it's just amazing that I can stand by them," he said.

"I really hope that I can fly it as well as they did and hopefully not tangle it up."

Chef de mission Ian Chesterman described James as a great Australian who has represented the country well around the globe.
