A TONE DEAF SPEECH THAT BLAMES ANYONE AND EVERYONE EXCEPT FOR GUNS

I know very well that La Pierre's speech at the CPAC convention today, wasn't intended to do damage to his organization, the National Rifle Association.  But I think this is exactly what he did.   At least I'm hopeful that this will be the result.

In a speech a week following the massacre of 17 people in Parkland, Florida (which follows Columbine, Aurora Theater, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Charleston, San Diego, Orlando, Las Vegas, Suntherland Springs Texas, and resulted in the deaths of 590 people in 2017 alone from mass killings) Wayne La Pierre hit all the popular, populist, nationalist, right wing and Trump supporter themes from the sanctity of the Second Amendment to the Socialist takeover of America.  It was an astounding speech, one that upped the NRA's campaign to thwart not only every single piece of gun control legislation but launched a brand new arena of attack:  Liberal America.   In fact, Wayne says "There is no greater freedom than to keep and bear arms." Really?  This trumps the right to life as we proclaimed as "inalienable" and "God given" in the Declaration of Independence? 

Does the right to bear arms trump the right not to have young children in school slaughtered by someone with an AR-15?  Maybe it's just me, but I'm pretty damned certain that any of the mothers and fathers whose sons and daughters were shot to death by armed killers would not agree.  I have a feeling that the Second Amendment - however interpreted and misinterpreted - does not supersede their heartbreaking loss and lifelong grief that has been visited upon them.

In LaPierre's view, apparently it's Socialism that is America's biggest problem not guns and gun violence.  He mentioned the term evil "Socialism" a couple of dozen  times and each time pejoratively.  I wonder if Wayne knows that in all those corrupt, socialist countries in Europe, gun deaths are just exceptionally rare unlike here in the good old U.S. of A.  We topped 13,000 deaths last year with another 26,000 injured by guns.  Here's the data for all those horrendous Socialist European countries:

Why do I say that LaPeirre has announced the death of the NRA?  If you consider the context, Stonemen Douglas students massing in Tallahassee to confront Florida legislators, young kids like Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg forcefully, passionately and articulately condemning the lack of gun controls, and student protests all around the country since the Parkland slaughter just a week ago, LaPierre's vast expansion of the NRA's "talking points justification" for unlimited guns in America to attack socialists, the media, exploitative opportunists, elitists, liberals, Democrats goes much, much further than the NRA has ever gone before.  This in the face of 24 hour coverage of student protests, students pushing back on politicians, students saying "No More!"  His harsh, nativist speech was tone deaf at the very least and insulting to all America at best.

But it's more than this.  As one CNN commentator described his speech: "It's verbal vomit" a particularly apt description.   It was a 30 minute rant that ignored what's happening around the country right now.  Even Marco Rubio said that he was "open" to consider new gun controls, not that he ever will.  But LaPierre was speaking not to America but to Trumpettes and those die-hard Second Amendment nut jobs who think that the Government is going to break into their basements and confiscate their guns.  (This was an Obama threat.  Not so much so today).  He was speaking not to the America who is sick and tired of mass slaughter "Breaking News Headlines" appearing on our televisions every fucking week it seems.  He was not speaking to the students who have lived through the terror and horror of hearing rapid fire gunshots outside the closets they were hiding in.  He was not speaking to the students having to dodge their dead and bloodied classmates as they fled their school.  In fact, he mentioned the student protests not at all.  He was not speaking to the vast majority of Americans who are demanding stricter gun controls.  Apparently he did not see the CNN Town Hall gathering of Parkland Students, parents and officials where the NRA official Dana Loesch was roundly and loudly chastised for her unwillingness to see and acknowledge what is going on in America and how divorced is the NRA from reality.

And given LaPierre's solution - arming schools as if they were Army bases - he was speaking to an audience of one, Donald J. Trump.


We Americans are 10 times more likely to be killed by guns than in any Western European nation.    Wayne LaPierre and the NRA ignores this fact.  Pierre and the NRA, through his speech, has laid down a gauntlet to those of us who want stricter gun controls.  And this means the 97% of all Americans - left, right, liberal and conservative - who support tighter background checks and the 83% of us who want longer waiting periods to buy guns and the  67% of us who want assault weapons banned.

It is hard to understand just how deaf LaPierre is to what's happening around the country and why he dipped into the kind of over-the-top fascist rhetoric so common to the Rush Limbaugh's and Alex Jones' of the right wing world.  I think and hope America has come to the conclusion that we can no longer rely on our elected officials to do the right thing for us.  To protect us and not the NRA.

Here's LaPierre's full speech.  It follows Dana Loesch's introductory pep talk.    I urge you to watch the entire thing.  It is a blatant call to arms - pardon the pun - to conservatives and right wingers to fight any and all efforts to protect our citizens from mass killings by gunfire.  I think he's made a significant tactical error and a huge public relations mistake.   I think he may have just announced the death of the National Rifle Association.
