Feeding raw chicken to dogs increases risk of paralysis

  • New research has revealed that feeding your dog raw chicken could kill them
  • A study linked a bacteria present in raw chicken to paralysing condition AMP

  • It is recommended that you feed your pup regular dog food exclusively

Letting your pet pooch snack on raw chicken could be detrimental to their health, according to a group of Melbourne researchers.

A study conducted at the Werribee Animal Hospital revealed that consuming raw chicken increases the risk of developing acute polyradiculoneuritis (APM) in dogs.

The exact cause of APM has always baffled vets, until the results of their new study identified raw chicken - especially chicken necks - as a 'major risk factor'.

According to 9NEWS, the results suggest that the risk of developing the potentially fatal disease increases by a whopping 70 per cent in dogs that are fed raw chicken.

Raw chicken contains the bacterial pathogen Campylobacter - a 'triggering agent' in 40 per cent of humans suffering from GBS - which has been linked with canine APM.

During the study, the diets of 27 dogs showing symptoms of AMP were examined by chief investigator Dr Matthias le Chevoir and his team at the University of Melbourne's U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital.

Compared with the 'symptom-free control group', they concluded that Campylobacter was the 'likely reason' for immune system impairment and paralysis.

AMP can be fatal to dogs - and those that survive face a lengthy recovery.

Similar to Guillain-Barré syndrome in humans, APM is a nerve disorder that can cause acute paralysis and destroy the immune system.

The debilitating condition causes weakness in hind legs that can quickly spread to the animal's front legs, neck, head and face.

Dr le Chevoir now recommends feeding your pup regular dog food and steer clear of raw meat diets until more research is carried out.
