A 22-year-old woman fell from a cliff and ended up fracturing her spine after illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

American border patrol agents saw a man walking near Highway 98 east of Ocotillo in Imperial County, waving his arms to attract attention. 

He led officials to his girlfriend and told the agents that the pair of them had fallen off a 20-foot cliff.

A 22-year-old Mexican woman plunged off a 20-foot cliff while trying to cross the border into the U.S. illegally, landing her in the hospital with a fractured spine. The area is mountainous 

The woman was rescued by U.S. emergency services after falling 20 feet off a cliff 

The terrain was mountainous after the duo illegally crossed the border, officials said.

Although the man wasn't injured his partner had a serious back injury.

After agents reached the woman they decided to call emergency workers to assist.

She was then placed on a gurney and hoisted out by a helicopter. 

An MRI at a nearby trauma hospital found she had fractured her spine in the fall. After recovering in hospital she will be returned to Mexico along with her 44-year-old boyfriend (stock image or a border patrol agent)

She was flown to a hospital where an MRI revealed that she had fractured her spine.

Agents detained her boyfriend, a 44-year-old man from Mexico.

His 22-year-old Mexican girlfriend will remain in hospital until she recorders before then being returned to Mexico, border patrol agents said.
