Next year's World Cup is providing extra motivation for the Australian players in the one-day international cricket series against England.

The home side made 304 runs in yesterday's series opener in Melbourne but could not defend the total.

Next year's World Cup makes every innings more significant.

"I think it's definitely important not to look too far ahead but this is a good opportunity for us guys and the young guys coming in to cement our places in the World Cup team," Mitchell Marsh said.

He said he felt well-placed after scoring a half century at the MCG and two centuries in the Ashes series.

"I'm very clear in the moment in what I want to do in my first 30 balls, which is the most challenge of batting in cricket," he said.

"I've got a clear game plan and I'm just sticking to it no matter what format I'm playing in."

The five-game one-day series against England will be the ultimate proving ground.

"We certainly do have a series on our hands. England are a very good one-day team and have been for the last 18 months," he said.

"They play a great game style for fans to come and watch that's for sure, they're very attacking in the way they play.

"They played really well and credit to them, they outplayed us in pretty much all facets of the game."

Jason Roy celebrates his century

The Australians need to find a way to contain England opener Jason Roy, who made 180 off 151 balls at the MCG.

"It was a great innings. I think his first 50 or 60 runs were chanceless and really in those first 10 overs he took the game away from us," Marsh said.

"He has the ability to do that and we'll have to come up with some plans for him in the next game.

"Hopefully that's the last time he does that this series."
