Targeted Ontario slaying 'believed to be linked' to death of Hamilton Mafia figure
Homicide investigators say they have linked a 2017 York Region shooting death to the slaying of an infamous Hamilton underworld figure months later, CBC Toronto has learned.
Detectives from York Regional and Hamilton police are set to provide an update on the joint investigation on Tuesday morning in Aurora. CBC Toronto will be live streaming the news conference, which is expected to start at 11 a.m. ET.
Mila Barberi, 28, was killed in a daylight shooting in an industrial area of Vaughan on March 14, 2017. Barberi was shot several times and died in hospital. A 40-year-old man who was with her at the time also suffered injuries but survived. Police have not identified him.
Investigators previously said the shooting was targeted, but didn't elaborate on the identity of the intended target.
A news release issued by York Regional Police on Tuesday only vaguely references an "incident" in Hamilton "believed to be linked" to Barberi's death.
CBC Toronto has learned the "Incident" is the shooting death of Angelo Musitano, 39, who was gunned down in the driveway of his Waterdown home in May 2017.

Mila Barberi, 28, was found on Caster Avenue near Highway 407 and Weston Road in Vaughan, Ont., with several gunshot wounds on March 14, 2017. She later died in hospital. (Facebook)
Musitano was the son of Domenic Musitano, a longtime crime boss in Hamilton who had close ties to the Rizzuto crime family in Montreal.
Both Musitano and his brother, Pat Musitano, served nearly 10 years in prison for their roles in the 1997 shooting death of Johnny Papalia — arguably Hamilton's most infamous Mafia figure — and one of his lieutenants, Carmen Barillaro.
Canadian organized crime experts believe Musitano's death may have been retaliation for his role in Papalia's murder.
Earlier this month, police revealed they believed Musitano was "stalked" for several days before he was killed and that multiple people were involved. Hamilton homicide detectives previously released images of a stolen Ford Fusion used as the getaway car in Musitano's homicide. And earlier this month, they identified three other vehicles seen in and around Musitano's home before his death.
No description or other details of Musitano's killer have been released.

Hamilton police say this vehicle was used by the suspect accused of shooting mobster Angelo Musitano. (Hamilton police)
A suspect in Barberi's shooting was described by police at the time as a man about six-feet-two and 250 pounds. He was wearing all black and had his face covered in security camera images that captured him in the moments before the killing.
Several days after Barberi was shot dead, police recovered a dark Jeep Grand Cherokee that investigators said was connected to the slaying.
Homicide detectives are expected to relay new information about "outstanding suspects and suspect vehicles" related to both homicides.
