Party barge for Swan River gets green light after monster second venue bid shot down
A floating event venue that can accommodate parties for up to 250 people has been granted approval to operate in the Swan River, about 400 metres from Elizabeth Quay.
The $1.5 million barge — known as "The Raft" — will be 420 square metres and host events including weddings, corporate functions and cinema nights.
The company behind the proposal, Old Salt, will transfer people by boat between the Barrack Street Jetty and the barge, which will be permanently moored in the middle of the river.
It hopes to have the facility operating early next year.
The State Government said strict environmental conditions relating to noise and waste management have been applied to the approval, but the facility still needs to be granted a liquor licence.
Old Salt managing director Katie Chrystal said the idea was inspired by The Island bar in Sydney.
"I was sitting there having a beer and I said this needs to come to Perth and rang my dad up and said 'we are bringing this to Perth?'," Ms Chrystal said.
"And since then it has just expanded into the vision we have today.
Old Salt chairman Haydn Chrystal said he believed Perth would embrace the concept.
"I think they'll love it," Mr Chrystal said.
"I think they'll froth over it actually, to be honest."
Bigger proposal knocked back
A larger proposal by rival company Barge Co for a 50-metre-long vessel for up to 600 people has been knocked back.
This comes despite the company being granted a liquor licence for its $7.3 million proposal to operate off Elizabeth Quay and Port and Coogee beaches.
Environment Minister Stephen Dawson said nine Government departments had lodged concerns with the proposal.
"There were some concerns about the size of the other proposal and the fact it was a very big boat and it would need to go under the Fremantle Traffic Bridge," Mr Dawson said.
"If there was a gust of wind or a high tide it would put that bridge at risk."
But Mr Dawson said it was possible a second barge could be approved in the future.
"The proponent of the other proposal has had a knock back," Mr Dawson said.
"They may choose to walk away, they may choose to put another proposal in. But at this stage it's one barge."
Barge Co declined to comment on the decision.
