Tasmania's former mining minister is facing a $159 fine and three demerit points after he was caught speeding on his way home from a darts event late last night.

Adam Brooks was travelling the more than 300 kilometres from Hobart to his home in Tasmania's north-west when was caught going 15 kilometres over the speed limit.

The Liberal MP had been at a darts event watching Phil "The Power" Taylor at Wrest Point Hotel Casino, which he posted about on social media.

"It was a sensational night with plenty of jokes and some pretty strange outfits being worn. It was great to see Phil in Tassie," he wrote on Facebook.

Mr Brooks has declined to answer specific questions about how fast he was travelling but has confirmed to the ABC that he was caught speeding.

"I can confirm I was inadvertently 15km over the speed limit when returning home to the north-west after attending a darts event in Hobart," he said.

"Speeding is never OK and there is no excuse, and I'll face the consequences and pay the fine when I receive the infringement notice."

The penalty for the offence is three demerit points and a $159 fine.

Mr Brooks has not clarified if he was in a car branded with Liberal party advertisements ahead of the March state election.

The colourful Braddon MP was the Liberal's second biggest vote winner at the 2014 state election.

He was elevated to cabinet in 2016 before an email controversy saw him relegated to the backbench.
