Boaters tread water for three hours after falling overboard off Perth coast

Police say three people rescued 4 nautical miles off the coast of Perth after falling off the back of a boat about 8:00pm on Saturday (AWST) are lucky to be alive.

A large-scale search was launched with a jet-aircraft, two helicopters and nine emergency vessels scouring the area.

Two 24-year-old women and a 30-year-old man spent about three hours treading water before they were spotted and pulled aboard a water police boat about 11:00pm.

The skipper, a man in his mid-twenties, had not realised his friends had fallen overboard until he turned around and realised he was all alone on the 6.4 metre boat.

It is understood the trio had been seasick and standing at the rear of the vessel as they made their way back to Fremantle after a day on Rottnest Island.

The skipper turned around but could not spot them in the darkness and 3 metre swell so quickly raised the alarm.

It was a 90 metre support tender from an oil rig anchored off the coast that eventually spotted the three more than 2 nautical miles from where they had gone overboard.

The Far Statesman had volunteered to help with the search, making use of high-tech radars and large search lights it carries in case riggers fall overboard.

The trio were picked up by a police boat and taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital where they were treated for severe exhaustion and hypothermia.

Police say if they had not been spotted they could easily have drowned.

"It could have quite easily gone very tragic, I guess one of their saving graces was they were quite young and fit," Water Police Acting Sergeant Alan Trist said.

"It's hard enough locating people during daylight hours, to try and locate them at night is extremely difficult."

Although the boat was fitted with life jackets, none of those who fell overboard had been wearing one.

Acting Sergeant Trist said while it was not a legal requirement for adults to be wearing a life jacket, in conditions like last night, it would have been a good idea.

He said a bright orange or yellow jacket made it a lot easier to spot someone in dark and rough seas.

Police said the three and their families were extremely grateful for the efforts of all involved, as was the skipper who had been highly distressed.

It is not known if alcohol played a role in the incident.

The skipper was not breathalysed because it is not required under WA legislation.

The Department of Transport and Marine Safety is making enquiries.
