THE CAMPAIGN TO DE-LEGITIMIZE ROBERT MUELLER AND THE RUSSIAN INVESTIGATION

If you've not been in a coma over the past couple of weeks, you will no doubt have noticed that criticism of Special Counsel Robert Mueller and the entire Russian investigation has steadily gained traction. It's not only coming from Rush Limbaugh, Alex Jones and Fox News where you wold expect negative views of Mueller, but now its spread to elected members of the House of Representatives. At last week's House Judiciary Committee hearing that featured Deputy Attorney General, Rod Rosenstein, here's some of the comments Republicans voiced against Mueller and his investigation.
Trump's call for "rebuilding" the FBI is nothing new, at least in the general sense although the term "rebuilding" is new. But even before he was certified as President, Trump regularly criticized the FBI, CIA and NSA. When we first learned that Russia might have "meddled" in our Presidential Election back in June of 2016, I have to say that I was skeptical. At first. But as more and more info emerged it became clear that there has been a well-organized, concerted campaign to win the election for Trump.
The latest "wrinkle" in the Russian investigation, is the Trump Administration's - along with the assistance of Fox News and right wing media - current efforts to slime Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller's Russian investigation and the House and Senate committees who are also investigating Russian interference in the last Presidential Election. Trump and company have focused their attacks on the FBI, the agency at the forefront of all things Russian, and are currently embarked on a concerted campaign to discredit every official body who is investigating Russian interference into our last elections. The latest e-mail "scandal" centers around two Mueller staffers who exchanged anti-Trump communications prior to Trump's election. The circumstances surrounding this latest "scandal" are murky at best. How is it that the Department of Justice released the contents of these private e-mail exchanges of two DOJ employees not only to the House Judiciary Committee but also to Fox News? Why not, one might ask, to MSNBC or CNN as opposed to other news organizations? Frankly, I have to say that this breach of DOJ policy - the FBI does not "comment" on ongoing investigations and this e-mail scandal is something that is still under investigation at the DOJ - is fairly unprecedented.
But Trump has (for some reason that escapes my simple mind) has been dissing our intelligence agencies from the very date that we were informed that Russia had interfered with our 2016 Presidential Election Recall, if you will, that this announcement on a Friday afternoon was immediately overshadowed by the Access Hollywood of the Trump Pussy Grabbing tape. Forget that Trump has never called Putin to task, I was shocked that Trump chose to slime the FBI, the CIA and the NSA while he was running for president. "Why" I thought "would this guy dis the very agencies that he would be in charge of if he was elected when these are the government agencies who would be front and center in any investigation into Russian meddling? It made no sense to me.
But now it does. Trump's constant mud-slinging against our intelligence agencies reveals a fear of exposure that is palpable. There is simply no other explanation that makes any sense. Of course, I mean here in the real world where most of us reside, and not the "alternate world of facts" that Trump and his corrupt buddies inhabit.
We'll see where all this ends up. Will Trump fire Mueller? Will he fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein? Will the Republican led House and Senate committees investigation Russian meddling suddenly decide that it's all a big "nothing-burger" and close up shop?
Who Knows? After all this is Trumpland and nothing is certain.
