Richmond broke a 37-year premiership drought when it defeated Adelaide by 48 points in the grand final at the MCG. Tigers star Dustin Martin won every major accolade including the Brownlow and Norm Smith Medals.
The 2017 retiree class was headlined by AFL legends Nick Riewoldt, Sam Mitchell, Bob Murphy, Steve Johnson, Jobe Watson and Josh Gibson.
Women's Cricket
The Southern Stars were officially renamed the Australian women's cricket team and went on to retain the Women's Ashes.

Adelaide won the inaugural AFLW premiership, as public support for the league exceeded expectations, kicking off with a lock-out at Princes Park.

Tom Brady solidified his named in NFL glory as he led the New England Patriots to their fifth championship in a 25-point overtime comeback win over the Atlanta Falcons.
The Golden State Warriors ran through the rest of the NBA, winning their fifth championship as Kevin Durant joined their start studded line-up. Australian Nathan Walker debuted in the NHL and the Houston Astro's won their first World Series in franchise history.
Golf
Australian Marc Leishman had a couple of wins on the US PGA Tour, while Sergio Garcia won the Masters in a play-off against Justin Thomas. Dustin Johnson and Shanshan Feng finished world number one in the respective men's and women's rankings.
Surfing
Tyler Wright won her second consecutive World Surf League title despite tearing a medial ligament in her right leg shortly before the end of the season.
Swimming
Emily Seebohm, Emma McKeon and Mack Horton left the world championships in Budapest with medals, but Australia struggled to fill many of the events races ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
