The region of Ostergotland looks like a perfect Christmas scene as fir trees and small wood cabins surround the frozen lakes

Plunging temperatures have one very definite upside - they can change the landscape into a winter wonderland.

And lakes and rivers can be transformed into beautiful natural ice rinks.

These mesmerising images, from China to Canada with Europe in between, show rinks that are all a paradise for skaters.

From a frozen Lake Louise in Banff surrounded by snow-capped mountains to Shichahai Lake in Beijing, winter offers the opportunity to skate in some of the world's most stunning landscapes.

While the frozen Keystone Lake in Colorado and Ostergotland in Sweden become the perfect Christmas scenes.
