Where: Beehive Barn, one of a cluster of stone cottages converted from old barns and stables, stands isolated beside a country lane near the Northumberland heritage coast.

There is also a shared grass tennis court. Downstairs you can curl up beside the wood-burning stove to watch TV or DVDs, while the large open-plan kitchen also has a seating area. 

Upstairs there a master bedroom and a twin room, both en suite, with a further twin room and bathroom. Dogs are welcome. 

What to see: The coastline is dotted with medieval castles. Park at Craster and walk along the seashore to the ruins of Dunstanburgh. 

Nearby Howick Hall & Gardens is the home of Earl Grey tea. Take a boat to the Farne Islands to see the seabird colonies. 

At Holy Island, a couple of miles away, explore the remains of its 12th Century Priory.
