Private plane blown off runway and into building near Malta airport

A private plane has crashed into a building adjacent to Malta International Airport after it was blown off the runway by strong winds.

The unmanned aircraft was unhinged from its parking spot before slamming into the Hal Farrug offices of construction company Polidano Group on Wednesday night, Malta Today reported.

It is believed the unoccupied plane moved off the tarmac after heavy winds presumably dislodged and blew away the wheel chock that had been preventing it from moving.

Pictures of the crash show the nose of the plane poking into the side of the offices after crashing through security fences.

The Dassualt Falcon 7X plane, registered in Bermuda, is reportedly owned by the former deputy chairman of the UK Conservative Party, Michael Ashcroft.

"It seems like it was the result of the strong winds," Polidano legal representative Jean Paul Sammut told Malta Today.

"The building didn't sustain major damage, but we presume the aircraft did."

The airport's emergency crew were also on the scene, although no injures have been reported.

In a statement, Malta International Airport (MIA) confirmed to local media the private jet was blown away from apron 4, where it was parked.

It went through the airport fence and onto the adjacent road, crashing into private property nearby, it said.

MIA said the incident occurred due to the strong winds which hit the island in the evening.

"The airport's Operations and Security teams were deployed to the scene immediately to safeguard the integrity of the Aerodrome and secure the airport perimeter," the statement said.

The Bureau of Air Accident Investigation has launched an investigation into the incident.
