Australia's Eurovision brains trust has gone back to the beginning for the nation's next crack at the song contest.

In Jessica Mauboy, SBS has chosen the performer who first represented Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in 2014 — even though then she was an interval act in a semi-final, rather than a competitor in the contest.

At the time, her performance capped off more than 30 years of the contest being broadcast in Australia, and a growing following of fans, not just those whose background was from a country that competed in Eurovision.

Guy Sebastian was Australia's first formal entrant in 2015. He came fifth, and was followed by Dami Im — who finished second in 2016 — and Isaiah Firebrace, who came ninth in Ukraine last year.

There is an interesting balance in Australia's presence at Eurovision, with some Europeans — and perhaps some locals — wondering why on earth this country is competing at a European-based song contest.

But this is really a red herring. Nations like Israel, Morocco, Turkey, Russia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, who are either partly or entirely outside the boundaries of Europe, have all competed in the competition.

No call has yet been made about a permanent spot for Australia in Eurovision, although there is talk that the group in charge of such decisions may be discussing Australia's ESC future in the new year.

Given the lack of permanent status, and the expectations of Australian fans, the pressure is on local organisers to select the right performer and the right song to maintain the country's excellent record.

The choice of Mauboy signals a return to an established star — similar to the choice of Guy Sebastian for Australia's first official entry in 2015 — following a relative newcomer in Isaiah Firebrace last year.

Mauboy, who started out 11 years ago on Australian Idol, has built a solid musical career outside of her Eurovision history, selling well in excess of two million singles and albums in Australia.

At the time of her first Eurovision performance, some were critical of her vocals and the song, Sea of Flags.

Even so, her debut was generally well received, and her experience on the big Eurovision stage will stand her in good stead at the contest next May.

With Mauboy's selection, the link with Sony Music remains; each of the performers who has represented Australia has been signed to the music label.

SBS is likely to reveal Mauboy's song for Eurovision sometime early next year ahead of the contest in Lisbon from May 9 to 13 (AEDT).

Portugal's Eurovision victory early this year, by Salvador Sobral singing Amar Pelois Dois, showed you don't necessarily need a glitzy production number with fireworks and costume reveals to win the contest.

If the right song can be found to suit her personality and voice, Mauboy is well capable of matching — or perhaps even bettering — Dami Im's result from 2016.

Jess.
