From Sam to Simmons: Grandstand Radio's 2017 year in review
ABC Grandstand is celebrating a historic sporting year, combining audio highlights, interviews and expert discussion to re-visit 2017's unforgettable moments and timeless memories.
In the first half of Grandstand's review of 2017 we recap on the stunning year enjoyed by the Matildas and Sam Kerr, the Melbourne Storm's third NRL premiership, Winx's spring racing dominance, Ben Simmons' meteoric rise in the NBA and many other major sporting moments.
Matildas
The popularity and recognition of women's football in Australia skyrocketed this year thanks to the Matildas' dominance of the international scene.
Led by superstar Sam Kerr, the Matildas won the Tournament of Nations in the United States and defeated China and Brazil in friendlies on home soil.
Men's Cricket
David Warner enthralled the home crowd at the SCG in January with a century before lunch against Pakistan. After a breakthrough first Test win against India in Pune, the series victory went to India 2-1.
What followed was a long winter dominated by a pay dispute leading into the current home Ashes series, which Australia leads 2-0 ahead of the third Test at the WACA ground in Perth.
Rugby League
The Melbourne Storm won their third NRL premiership with a 34-6 win over the North Queensland Cowboys in the grand final.
Australia won both the men's and women's World Cups on home soil and the NRL announced the launch of a national women's rugby league for 2018.
Basketball
The Perth Wildcats won their eighth NBL championship and the Sydney Uni Flames won their first WNBL title since 2001.
The Boomers had a strong Asia Cup win, while Ben Simmons, Joe Ingles, Matthew Dellavedova, Patty Mills and Thon Maker led one the strongest crop of Australian athletes ever in the NBA.
Spring Racing
Winx finished the racing year undefeated on 22 straight wins, which included a third consecutive WS Cox Plate triumph.
Rekindling took out the 2017 Melbourne Cup in a nail-biting finish for the O'Brien family, as son Joseph got one over his father Aidan, who trained the second placegetter Johannes Vermeer.
Athletics
Sally Pearson's return from injury culminated in a 100 metres hurdles world championships victory in London.
Justin Gatlin upstaged the retiring Usain Bolt in the men's 100m final in London and Isis Holt won the 100m and 200m double at the World Para Athletics Championships.
Netball
Super Netball was launched in 2017 with Sunshine Coast Lightning winning the inaugural grand final with a 65-48 victory over GWS Giants.
Meanwhile, Australia completed its first Constellation Cup sweep in four years, defeating New Zealand 4-0.
Rugby Union
The Wallabies endured a rough 2017 campaign, which concluded with former captain Stephen Moore retiring.
The New Zealand sides were unbeaten against Australian opponents in Super Rugby, while the Western Force was axed after months of deliberation.
A-League
Sydney FC won its third A-League championship after a penalty shootout victory against Melbourne Victory after only losing one match during the season.
Cycling
Christopher Froome won his fourth Tour de France title, while Australia's Michael Matthews won the green jersey.
Katlin Garfoot claimed another bronze at the world road cycling championships in the individual time trial.
Winter Olympics
Australian Winter Olympic team Chef de Mission Ian Chesterman joined Grandstand's Year in Review to discuss our athletes' preparation ahead of the 2018 Games at PyeongChang.
Social Media
Grandstand's Dean Bilton joined the Year in Review to reveal the biggest sporting moments to break online and the most popular discussions.
The AFL dominated the charts and the Matildas stayed in the spotlight throughout 2017, peaking during their Tournament of Nations win.
The most popular Tweet belonged to 'The King' Lebron James and his political opinion of US President Trump.
