While over two per cent of the UK and US now class themselves as bisexual, Twitter appears to have blocked the search term on its site.

Many people have criticised Twitter for the issue, branding the site as 'biphobic.'

Twitter says it has now identified the error, and is 'working quickly to resolve it,' although a timeline for this remains unclear.

While over two per cent of the UK and US now class themselves as bisexual, Twitter appears to have blocked the search term on its site. Many people have criticised Twitter for the issue, branding the site as 'biphobic'

Since Friday, several users have noticed that when you search #bisexual, a message appears stating: 'The term you entered did not bring up any results.'

Many tweeted about the issue, claiming that it was discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Whitney Drake tweeted: 'Confirming that if you search #bisexual and click on photos, there is NOTHING there. I'm bi. I am a person. My existence isn't offensive.' 

Twitter has now responded to the influx of tweets about the issue, and tweeted: 'We've identified an error with search results for certain terms. We apologise for this. We're working quickly to resolve and will update soon'

Chase Strangio wrote: 'Filters erasing bisexual content? 

'Hey Twitter, that sound like discrimination based on sexual orientation. Also dangerous and cruel.'

Others claimed that the issue was due to the term 'bisexual' being automatically linked to porn.

Speaking to BBC Newsbeat, Kate Harrad, of campaign group The Bisexual Index said that bisexual people have 'historically been hypersexualised and associated with porn and promiscuity'.

She said: 'Every bi-activist knows the problems of trying to search for bi-content on the web and some public wifi systems block it altogether, even when it's nothing to do with sex, because bisexual is seen as a dodgy word in itself.

'This is why Twitter needs to be very sensitive to any filtering that reduces access to bi content, and very aware of the problem of bisexual erasure.'

As part of this update, we're also clarifying that when we review accounts that demonstrate spam-like behavior, we focus on behavioral signals, not the factual accuracy of the information they share.

Graphic violence and adult content

We're providing more specific detail around the types of content we consider to be 'graphic violence' or 'adult content.' We're also updating our media policy Help Center page so it includes examples that help set expectations around the types of content covered by this policy. Please note that the media policy will be updated again on November 22, to account for hateful imagery.

The finding comes just weeks after Twitter revealed a calendar of updates for new ways to combat harassment and abuse on the site.
