Talks to revive a Pacific Rim free trade pact abandoned by United States President Donald Trump have stalled after Canada pulled out.

The 11 countries remaining in the Trans-Pacific Partnership had been expected to endorse a basic agreement at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Vietnam.

But the talks have been postponed indefinitely after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his trade minister failed to show up to the final meeting.

Australian Trade Minister Steven Ciobo says it is unfortunate.

"This is a disappointing development. There is of course still opportunity to continue discussions to try to work our way through the last remaining issues Canada raised," he said.
