An Argentinian tourist has made the mistake of driving his car straight into flood waters in Melbourne on Saturday.

The city was drenched after a powerful storm, but that didn't appear to stop Fito Hernayes from attempting to make a pass at the corner of Dudley Street and Wurundjeri Way.

In a video shared by 9 News, Mr Hernayes can be seen driving the white vehicle through the flood waters before realising he wasn't going to make it.

The tourist told the publication the road had yet to be cordoned off by police, who arrived just moments after his car began sinking to divert traffic.

'It wasn't very clear because it was raining so much,' Mr Hernayes said.

'I thought there was a little bit of water only, so I said, "I'm going fast".'

Tradie Nick Robinson, who filmed the incident, said he 'couldn’t help laughing' at Mr Hernayes' attempt.

Mr Robinson said it 'defied belief' that he would take on the flash flood.

The tourist eventually left his car to sink, before wading out in the waist-high waters to safety.

Emergency services were called to the incident as fumes from the car began filling the area.
