The typical chief executive — a male banker in Sydney
Male, living in Sydney and with a background in finance — that is the typical chief executive at one of Australia's top listed companies.
The gender balance remains so skewed that there are only 12 women at the helm of the top 200 companies on Australia's share market.
A study released earlier this year highlighted that there are more Johns, Peters or Davids than women running or chairing Australia's biggest firms.
But it isn't just gender where Australia's business leaders lack diversity, according to the latest research into Australia's corporate bosses from recruiting firm Robert Hall.
Almost half are based in Sydney, with more than a quarter in Melbourne and a mere handful across the rest of the nation.
Although it clearly doesn't pay to stay in one place — almost 60 per cent of ASX 200 CEOs have worked overseas at some stage in their career.
"In today's globalised world, obtaining experience of different working cultures is an important way for business leaders to differentiate themselves," observed David Jones, the senior managing director at Robert Half Asia-Pacific.
Half of them have a background in finance — accounting, banking or other financial services.
"Companies are constantly under pressure to improve profit margins and deliver increased shareholder value," Mr Jones explained.
"Business leaders with strong financial capabilities are highly valued as they can easily interpret the financial ramifications of business decisions, adding a practical, financial perspective to a strategic one."
But the majority have come to their current top job from another stint as boss, or as a senior executive.
Loyalty does pay, with more than 60 per cent of CEOs having risen through the ranks of their current company, typically having been there eight years before they got the top job.
However, the top job takes its toll, with the bulk of CEOs having been in the role for less than five years, while only 13 per cent have been there more than a decade.
