The London Underground is one of few places in the capital where you can't get a mobile signal.

But soon commuters will be able to make calls and search the web on the tube after Transport for London announced a successful 4G trial on the underground network.

TfL has previously said it plans to wire up the London Underground with full 4G coverage by 2019.

Once live, the 4G network will allow customers to check their emails, access social media and check for live travel information on the Tube.

THE 4G TRIALS 

TfL successfully trialled the technology on the Underground's Waterloo & City Line during the summer, which saw 4G technology tested in tunnels and stations.

All four major mobile network operators (Vodafone, O2, Three and EE) participated in the design of the trial, with Vodafone and O2 carrying out testing within the tunnels, which took place outside customer hours.

The trial tested making data-based calls between stations without a drop in signal, providing insight into how the technology could be rolled out across the Underground network in future.

It allowed TfL to practise laying down new fibre cables within stations and tunnels.

The aim is to eliminate London's connectivity 'not-spots' which could mean the capital catches up with 4G-friendly cities such as Tokyo, New York and Paris.

WiFi is already available on most platforms on the London Underground but the service cuts out between stations.

'This is a brilliant initiative and part of our work to improve connectivity at home, in our high streets, public spaces and across the transport network,' said London's Chief Digital Officer, Theo Blackwell.

'TfL's innovation shows we can make a real difference and benefit Londoners through using city-wide public assets in a smarter way, starting with the Tube.'

Plans for the data network were first announced in August after London Mayor Sadiq Khan unveiled several proposals in a letter to London's 33 local authorities. The plan is to eliminate London's 4G connectivity 'not-spots'

4G MOBILE NETWORK

Sadiq Khan wants to eliminate London's connectivity 'not-spots' which could mean the capital catches up with more 4G-friendly cities such as Tokyo, New York and Paris. 

The move was welcomed by business leaders who said London lags behind its rivals in terms of connectivity.

Sources suggest the first trail is expected on the Waterloo & City line with initial tests at night and at the weekends.

It is part of a wider pledge by the mayor to improve London's communications and build a reputation as a high tech city.

'The success of this trial shows that we are on track to unlock one of the UK's most high profile not-spots and deliver 4G mobile coverage throughout our tunnels and Tube stations,' said Graeme Craig, Director of Commercial Development at TfL.

'This is great news for our customers and will also help us generate vital commercial income to reinvest in modernising and improving transport in London.'

TfL is yet to reveal how it will pay for the 4G installations, which could be maintained by the mobile networks themselves or paid for by increased travel fares.

Plans for the data network were first announced in August after London Mayor Sadiq Khan unveiled several proposals in a letter to London's 33 local authorities.

He wrote that he would be 'delivering 4G mobile connectivity to London Underground, both in station and tunnels from 2019, future-proofed ready for 5G', the Evening Standard reported.
