South Carolina girl kills herself with a rifle

Officials in South Carolina are investigating after an 11-year-old killed herself with a rifle.

Toni Rivers from Hampton County apparently told five of her friends that she 'couldn't take it anymore' after being bullied at school, and informed them she was going to kill herself.  

Family members said the sixth grader committed suicide Wednesday after being bullied at her Hampton County School District 1 elementary school. 

Toni's 14-year-old sister called 911. Deputies found Toni lying on her back with a gunshot wound from a small caliber rifle.

Toni Rivers was 11-year-old who was full of life and loved being outside, family members said

The sixth-grader used her own rifle to take her own life. Her older sister found her with a gunshot wound. She died 72 hours later

She managed to survive for a further 72 hours before succumbing to her injuries. 

Initially family members thought  the shooting was an accident because the rifle that was used in the shooting belonged to Toni, although the bullets were supposedly kept separately from the guns.  

Toni's mother, Amy Thomas, claimed that her daughter's school was told about the bullying two months ago and had even called the school four times in the days before the shooting. 

One parent claimed the bullying had been ongoing for a year with the school and district taking minimal action to prevent or stop it. 

'She was so energetic,' said Brandy Rivers-Dixon, Toni's aunt, to WTOC. 'Never sat down, never. She was born two-pounds, four-ounces, so she's always been a fighter, fighting from the moment she entered this world.' 

'We go out to Toni's home in the country thinking that there'd been an accident, you know?' said Maria Petersen, another of Toni's aunts. 'And when we get there, we find out that it wasn't an accident, and it was the result of Toni not being able to handle it anymore.

'Obviously, we're devastated beyond any type of words, and we're angry,' Petersen said. 'We're angry at a school system that failed that little girl, failed this family, and failed this community.' 

Toni's family have said they want bullies to be held accountable and punished for their actions. 

Relatives said they initially thought the shooting was an accident since the gun was her own

Toni's family have claimed the bullying had been going on for more than a year

The family claim and they had contacted the school on several occasions but that little was done to try and stop the bullying

The school has released a statement but not yet commented on the young girl's death or bullying allegations.

"It is with heavy hearts that the Hampton One family mourns the loss of one of our students. Our sympathy and prayers go out to the family and friends affected by this tragedy. Counselors have been made available and will continue to be available to offer any needed support. Student matters are confidential and we believe it would be inappropriate to comment further on this tragic incident." 

Six families with children at the school have agreed to be interviewed as part of the inquest into the child's suicide.

The state's Law Enforcement Division is investigating the death. 

A GofundMe page has been set up by the family to help cover funeral and medical costs.
