Steve Smith's patient but sparkling innings denied England on day three of the first Ashes Test, and showed the rest of Australia's line-up how a precocious batting talent can put the flair aside to grind out a potentially match-winning ton.

The Australian captain (141 not out off 326 balls) notched a 21st Test ton in 512 minutes to frustrate England's pacemen after the fall of Shaun Marsh, who made a useful 51.

With Tim Paine (13) and Mitchell Starc (6) falling cheaply, Smith hit the brakes as Pat Cummins came to the crease.

Together, Cummins and Smith scratched out a crucial 66-run partnership for the eighth wicket, with Smith biding his time before reaching the milestone with a glorious off drive.

"That's Test cricket isn't it? Sometimes you just have to put your ego away and just chill out for a bit and just wait," Smith told Grandstand.

"Things get easier out there if you're there for long enough and bowlers get quite bored, so you find ways to score eventually."

He said the crucial nature of his knock, coupled with Cummins' support role, made it one of his career-best innings.

"It would have to be up there with one of my better hundreds," he said.

"Obviously with the team at 4-70 at one point, really wanting to start this series off well, I had to dig deep and it was nice to put on a few partnerships back there.

"Shaun [Marsh] I thought played particularly well and was obviously disappointing not to go on with him.

"Patty Cummins coming out and backing himself, he had a strong defence and put away the loose balls. It was nice to get some of those partnerships in there and get ourselves in the lead."

Smith said the wicket was offering more pace on day three, adding to the challenge of clawing back England's advantage.

"It was pretty tough out there, the wicket was quite two-paced and they bowled some pretty reasonable spells and set some pretty defensive fields," he said.

"It was about batting for a long period of time, and I think it was one of my slowest hundreds."

"I had to really dig deep, wait for the ball in my areas, and it meant a lot to get ourselves in the lead."

Australia, having nabbed two wickets late in the day to have England at 2-33 — a lead of just seven runs — will be hunting quick wickets in front of a baying crowd to grab decisive momentum on day four.
