Nutella puts price of its chocolate spread up
- All of Britain's 'Big Four' supermarkets passing the increased cost to consumers
- Comes as price of hazelnuts fell from £7.70 in 2016 to £4.90 per kg this year
- Nutella's parent company Ferrero said price rise covers cost elsewhere in brand
Nutella has hiked the price of its chocolate spread - despite the cost of hazelnuts falling in the past year.
Morrisons became the last of the 'Big Four' British supermarkets to hike the price this week, raising it by 22p for a 1kg pub, which lifts its price above a fiver to £5.20.
Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda had already increased the price of the spread.
Nutella's price hike comes after research by trade journal The Grocer showed that hazelnuts, one of the main ingredients used in the spread, were now trading at around £4.90 per kilogram - a huge fall in price from November last year, when they were trading around £7.50 to £7.70 per kilogram.
Nutella's parent company Ferrero defended the price rise, claiming the higher price would cover costs elsewhere in the company
Nutella's parent company Ferrero defended the price rise, claiming the higher price would cover costs elsewhere in the company.
Ferrero told The Grocer it was facing 'a variety of input pressures' across a range of its products.
A spokesman added: 'We are addressing these challenges with our retail partners.'
The exact price rise may vary between retailers although the cost is being passed onto the consumer.
Sainsbury's, Asda and Tesco have put up the price of a 200g jar from £1.50 to £1.60 and a 400g jar from £2.50 to £2.70 and the 1kg jar in the three chains is now slightly higher than Morrisons at £5.30 from £5.00.
It comes after a consumer watchdog in Germany found Nutella was increasing the amount of sugar in its spread, which Nutella denied, claiming they had simply substituted whey powder for milk powder to 'improve quality.'
The German subsidiary of Ferrero said it had made an 'adjustment' to the spread as many brands regularly do with their products.
Yet the consumer association noted that the colour of the spread had been made lighter due to the recipe change.
'As the colour of the new Nutella is lighter, we are working on the assumption that skimmed milk powder was added at the expense of cacao,' it said, noting that Ferrero is not required to disclose the amount of cacao in Nutella.
