Has Jake Lehmann thrown an Ashes selection spanner in the works?
The first day of the second round of Sheffield Shield matches is in the bank, with players still duking it out in domestic cricket for those contested spots for Australia's number six and wicket-keeping positions.
So how have our Ashes hopefuls fared so far?
Quick navigation
Who's the stand-out batsman so far?
A quick recap: our cricketing crystal ball reckons the Australian line-up is mostly settled, with question marks over just two spots.
Projected Gabba line-up
- David Warner
- Matt Renshaw
- Usman Khawaja
- Steve Smith
- Peter Handscomb
- [Batsman]
- [Wicket-keeper]
- Mitchell Starc
- Pat Cummins
- Josh Hazlewood
- Nathan Lyon
In round one, Usman Khawaja looked to have firmed up his spot at first drop for Australia with two fine knocks for the Bulls against Victoria, while Shaun Marsh and Hilton Cartwright made decent auditions for the number six spot.
But we finally have a bolter coming from the clouds to put a serious hand up in Australia's batting conversation, and it's none other than the national coach's own son.
Jake Lehmann, son of Darren, stood up to be counted for the Redbacks, hitting a marvellous 103 off just 115 balls — including 14 fours — in an eye-catching knock to put him back in the mix for number six.
Travis Head also doffed his cap in the national selectors' direction with a patient 67, while South Australian team-mate Tom Cooper looked very solid in his meticulous, unbeaten 55.
However, one man previously considered a banker by the ABC selectors — young Australian opener Matt Renshaw — may be tossing and turning with worry tonight after failing with the willow against Tasmania.
After Queensland skittled Tasmania for 186 — another paltry score for the Tigers this season — Renshaw was undone by Jackson Bird, dismissed for just 1 thanks to Alex Doolan's catch.
Khawaja looked OK for his 26 before he edged to the keeper for 27.
Does anyone want to keep for Australia?
But that keeper, current Test gloveman Matthew Wade, has continued to struggle in Shield cricket this year as he was clean-bowled by the Bulls' Luke Feldman for just 9.
In a three-way tussle for Australia's keeping duties, Wade has a battle on his hands to retain his place in the Test side.
And yet, none of his main rivals for the spot are exactly leaping at the chance.
South Australia's Alex Carey looked good for his 36, but couldn't convert the start as he fell to Victoria's Scott Boland in a 104-ball knock.
The door could be ajar for former Test keeper Peter Nevill, who will resume his innings at 32 not out on Sunday, having watched from the other end as Mitchell Starc belted 43 from 61 deliveries, with the paceman slogging seven boundaries and a six in an entertaining cameo.
Nevill was more circumspect, lasting 87 deliveries unbeaten and hitting five boundaries.
How did the other Test incumbents go?
Captain Steve Smith looks back in good touch, hitting 76 for the Blues against the Warriors. One man who the captain would have noticed in person was Cartwright, who snared Smith's dismissal.
David Warner's positive form in the first round, however, hasn't come through in NSW's second match, out for just 5.
Pat Cummins didn't get a bowl on day one but did show he's no mug with the bat, presently unbeaten on 19 for NSW.
Meanwhile, England's warm-up is off and running …
… and there was bad news for Alastair Cook and captain Joe Root, who both fell very cheaply in their warm-up clash with a WACA XI.
Cook fell for a second-ball duck, as WACA XI captain Nathan Coulter-Nile bagged the prized wicket for his young team.
Root failed to fire at second drop, dismissed for 9 when he was caught by Calum How off Aaron Hardie's bowling.
Opener Mark Stoneman got his eye in with a brisk 85 (featuring 16 boundaries), while David Malan (56) and Gary Ballance (51) worked up a sweat in the middle order before retiring their innings.
Jonny Bairstow (36 not out) and Chris Woakes (25 not out) are the unbeaten batsman still in the middle, with England ending the first day's play at 6-349.
New South Wales v Western Australia
Victoria v South Australia
Tasmania v Queensland
England v WACA XI
