Sexting

Fewer teenagers are sending nude pictures of themselves than first thought, new research from the Federal Government's eSafety Commission has revealed.

Key points:

  • 1 in 20 teenagers send nude images of themselves despite 90 per cent believing most of their peers do it
  • UK Safer Internet Centre says the data shows a contrast between perception and reality
  • Teen girls are nearly twice as likely to have shared a nude image than boys

In Australia and New Zealand, researchers found fewer than 1 in 20 teenagers send nude images of themselves despite 90 per cent believing most of their peers do it.

Specifically, the research is concerned with the sending, requesting, and receiving of nude or semi-nude images, leaving aside written messages.

In New Zealand and Australia, it focused on 14 to 17-year-olds, and in the UK, children as young as 11 were included.

"We know that sexting is a global phenomenon, and working with our partners in New Zealand and the UK, we wanted to understand the similarities and the differences in terms of trends," eSafety commissioner Julie Inman Grant said.

"What we found was consistent across borders, is that while about 90 per cent of teenagers think that sexting is rife in their peer base communities, in reality, only one in four teenagers is experiencing [it].

"As far as I'm concerned, that is a great result. That means that the train hasn't bolted, and that we can use education and prevention to reach teens."

Gap between perception and reality

The results are remarkably consistent, according to UK Safer Internet Centre director David Wright.

"The main conclusion that we did draw is this contrast between perception and reality," Mr Wright said.

"What the research will enable us to do is to challenge the tidal wave of normalisation we see in the media. And so, we can do that through education programs."

Dianne Gardiner, chief executive of Bastion Latitude, which ran the Australian survey, said the Australian research demonstrates a gender divide.

"Teen girls are nearly twice as likely to have shared a nude or semi nude image than teen boys… and they're also more likely to have received a nude that they haven't asked for," Ms Gardiner said.

"The reality is, it's mostly a negative emotion. Almost six in 10 talked about being uncomfortable. Four in 10 said that they were disgusted, one in four felt pressured.

"The reality is, even if teenagers are comfortable with the practice, their age makes it illegal, in most cases."

And while the new research might provide some relief to parents, UNICEF's Daniel Kardefelt-Winther said the risks for young people are significant.

"We saw a fairly low percentage of children engaging in sexting behaviours," Mr Kardefelt-Winther said.

"But I think even so, I mean this is one of the behaviours that have the highest potential for harm. And very long-lasting, severe harm."
