A fox has a hare raising experience when the tables turn during an intense chase of life and death.

After being tackled to the ground and attacked by the fox, the hare uses its last ounce of energy and fights back in Lithuania.

The fox then has to make a getaway as the hare chases the predator off.

Businessman Darius Babelis had been driving through the Mirabilis forest in Lithuania when he stumbled across the ensuing pursuit.

Darius, 44, from Kupiskis, Lithuania, said: 'I was driving by the side of Mirabilis forest when suddenly four frolicking hares ran past me.

'At the same time a fox ran out from the field and started to hunt the hare.

Darius, 44, from Kupiskis, Lithuania, said: 'I was driving by the side of Mirabilis forest when suddenly four frolicking hares ran past me 

'One hare ran to the wheat field. The fox went after it. Then I heard a hare's cry.

'I got myself into a position to take a picture, when the hare disengaged itself from the fox's jaw and ran away.

'But freedom was not long lived because the fox had caught the hare again.

'After a short fight the hare managed to free himself again and the fox took off in the other direction.

'I can't believe how lucky the hare was to win the battle.'
